Civic observatory is a collection of initiatives in which citizens have increased their engagement with the built environment, from 1850 until today.
C.O. is a live archive of methods, experiences and testimonies of people who aim(ed) to make citizens more aware, skilled and prepared to take action over their surroundings.
C.O. stems out of an interdisciplinary study by Sol Perez Martinez that sits at the intersection of architecture, pedagogy and politics, between practice and research.
C.O. articulates a network of people interested in developing a civic consciousness rooted in the places where we live.
C.O. is a platform that seeks to share lessons from the past in order to inform initiatives than enhance civic culture today.
Sol Perez Martinez is an architect, researcher and educator. Before coming to London, Sol was a lecturer in architectural history at Universidad Catolica de Chile and ran an independent architectural practice. From 2009 she and her firm partners had the opportunity to build more than 10.000 m2 for private clients and the Chilean government. Their last public building was a school in the South of Chile that encouraged her research about environment, education and engagement. Currently Sol works as an architecture and research consultant in London and Chile.
